Long-range transportation projects will be receiving aid in federal dollars from the Puget Sound Regional Council, which will be matched with local dollars in Kitsap County.

The funds will help pay for road, sidewalk, transit and other transportation projects throughout the county in 2023 and 2024, Kitsap Sun reported.

"PSRC’s executive board — made up of elected officials in King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish counties — gave their approval to a long list of projects around Puget Sound last month as part of a 2020 funding cycle," Kitsap Sun reported. "Nearly $540 million in funding will be directed out into communities in the region as part of the cycle, according to a PSRC funding list."

The funds will be going to several project in Kitsap County, including: Fairground Road, Sixth Street and others.

“The non-motorized facilities will increase walking and bicycle riding and physical activity among the students and provide obvious health benefits,” the application for the funds said, Kitsap Sun reported. “It will also hopefully decrease the number of automobiles transporting students to school and reduce the possibility of pedestrian/vehicle conflicts. Existing shoulders along the roadway do not provide an adequate pedestrian or bicycle facility.”
