A man suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol in a crash that killed his passenger is behind bars. A $500,000 warrant was served today as the 30-year-old man showed up at his place of work. The crash on February 5th claimed the life of a 31-year-old man.
An investigation by Port Orchard police and members of the joint traffic task force showed that at around 11:30 on the night of the incident, the vehicle was traveling at a high rate in the 1000 block of Mitchell Ave near the Mile Hill Dr overpass in Port Orchard when the suspect lost control and hit the overpass curb, a rock wall and then a telephone pole. The force of the crash caused the 2015 Chevrolet Impala to pitch upward from the rear of the car, causing the roof to impact the telephone. The vehicle collided with its front end thrown downward toward the ground severely damaging the Impala.
The driver initially told Port Orchard police he had been a passenger in the vehicle and that the car had been driven by the victim, whose body was located in bushes near the crash site by members of South Kitsap Fire and Rescue.
The driver was booked into the Kitsap County Jail on a charge of vehicular homicide.
